  • What is an Artist Statement?

In the Artist Statement (10-100 words long), the student should write about his/her work and what it means to him/her. It would be helpful if the artist statement tells how the work relates to the theme, what is the personal connection to the theme, what/who was the inspiration, and what was used to create the work.

  • What is the theme for this year?

The theme for this year is: I am Hopeful Because...

The judges want to know who the student is and how he/she sees the world around him/her. The work is supposed to express who the student is as an individual.

  • What are the different acceptable Arts categories for the contest?

The student has the chance to express who he/she is as an individual through one or more of the following: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts!

  • How many works of art can one student submit?

Students may enter the Reflections program in one or more arts categories. One entry per category.

  • Is The Child Supposed To Sign The Work?

In order to help with the anonymity of the work and non biased judging, we ask that the student not sign the work, but label it on the back instead.

  • Parents may not do the work for their child.

Parents, please allow your child the opportunity to create an individual art piece all on their own.

  • How will the submissions be judged?

Judges will be looking for:

Interpretation: How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement. The artist statement is extremely important, be sure to spend a good amount of time writing your statement.

Creativity: How creative and original the piece is in its interpretation of the theme and its presentation.

Technique: The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area.

  • How Many Submissions Will Advance To The Next Level?

  • Will My Child Get His/Her Work back? When?

All the students’ work will be returned except for the entries that advance to the next level. The advancing submissions will be forwarded to the next level of judging. If an entry is forwarded to the state level, it will not be returned until the end of the school year.
